After family telling us to not talk to strangers, don't venture to far from our place before we left on the plane........ I think we did everything they told us not too :) We left for Belize on Saturday at 6am and arrived back yesterday at midnight. 7 days of adventure and definitely our first real vacation without family or friends. It was a whole new experience for me....
We stayed in a garden cabana at the Cocotal Inn in San Pedro, Belize. It was the most perfect spot for our 2nd honeymoon! We walked the beach trails to get for restaurants, road bikes 2.5 miles to town for tour and find some hole in-the wall places to eat. We drank lots of Belikin beer (made in Belize City) and rum punch.
Leaving Belize City on the water taxi (a boat). We had no idea how long the it would take us to get to San Pedro until someone on the plane said "isn't that a 2 hr. taxi ride?"
We barely made the 5:30pm water taxi out of town when we arrived (that was the last one for the day).
The sun setting over Belize city
The pier at Cocotal Inn. Each morning we'd go sit in the chairs to drink our coffee. and in the afternoons nap in the hammocks.
The first day we just ventured a short bike ride down the beach for some supplies at the market. Then the second day we ventured 2.5 miles to town to visit the produce stands, bigger markets and take in the craziness of not getting ran over by a car or golf cart
On our way out of town the school was getting out for recess or lunch. A bunch of vendors would line up along the wall around the school to sell food (mostly candy) to the children
Our little red cabana
Across the street from the Inn entrance was the salt water lagoon. We took the kayaks out one day to venture around but I was too nervous as some people have seen crocodiles in here
The roads out of town are all dirt, very little rock, and the biggest pot holes you'd ever see. The locals say they don't fix the roads because the larger resorts don't want there guest venturing into town. They want them to stay on the resort so they'll eat and drink all there money away there.
The view North from the pier
The view south of the pier. This is also the trail to town. People walked, biked and even motorcycled down this as their main roads since the other is so bad
Can you find Waldo?.......The iguana
San Pedro from the water taxi
We even had a substitute dog named Marra. She was the Inn's watch dog. She'd walk with us to dinner and sometimes breakfast. I think we became her favorite when we fed her some chicken scraps from our dinner
Inside the Cabana
Sunset over the lagoon
One of the days we ventured a 20 minute water taxi ride to the sister island of Caye (pronounced Key) Caulker. Definitely a slower pace and this restaurant we walked by was roasting a piglet for dinner
Caye Caulker
Colton decided to venture out on the kayaks to the reef just east of the pier. The grounds keeper let him borrow his spear gun to try and catch some fish. when colton returned with three they were all pretty surprised he caught something.
He also had a lobster tail hiding in his pocket.
Colton cleaned the fish up and we took them to our favorite dinner spot, Ak' Bol for them to cook up for us
All in all we survived the car taxi rides to and from the airport, we had a good time relaxing in the sun, snorkeling at the reef and swimming with the sting rays and nurse sharks in "Shark Ray Alley". I haven't decided if I'd go back or not......... maybe we'll see some place new for the next trip. More pictures of the snorkeling trip to come. We are waiting to receive the pictures from a super nice, older couple from California that had a awesome underwater camera.
